Bauhaus

A revolutionary German design movement emphasizing function over form, clean lines, and the unity of art and technology.

History of Bauhaus Architecture

The Bauhaus school was founded by architect Walter Gropius in Weimar, Germany in 1919. Its radical mission was to reimagine the material world by unifying art, craft, and technology. The school attracted some of the most brilliant minds of the 20th century, including Mies van der Rohe, Marcel Breuer, Wassily Kandinsky, and Paul Klee.

The school moved to Dessau in 1925, where Gropius designed the iconic Bauhaus building — a masterwork of glass curtain walls and clean geometric forms that embodied the school's principles. Under Mies van der Rohe's directorship from 1930, the school moved to Berlin before being forced to close by the Nazi regime in 1933.

Many Bauhaus masters emigrated to the United States, where they profoundly influenced American architecture and design education. Gropius led Harvard's architecture department, while Mies van der Rohe transformed the Illinois Institute of Technology. The Bauhaus legacy lives on in virtually every aspect of modern design, from architecture to typography to industrial design.
