Craftsman

An American style celebrating handcrafted details, natural materials, and cozy proportions rooted in the Arts and Crafts movement.

History of Craftsman Architecture

The Craftsman style emerged in the early 20th century as the American expression of the broader Arts and Crafts movement, which originated in Britain as a reaction against industrial mass production. Gustav Stickley, through his magazine The Craftsman (1901–1916), popularized the style and gave it its name.

Architects Charles and Henry Greene elevated the Craftsman style to high art with their masterful bungalows in Pasadena, California. The Gamble House (1908) is considered the pinnacle of the style, with its exquisite woodwork, integrated design, and seamless connection to its garden setting.

Craftsman homes became enormously popular across America, particularly as affordable bungalows that could be ordered from Sears, Roebuck and Company catalogs. The style declined in the 1930s as Colonial Revival and Art Deco gained favor, but experienced a major revival beginning in the 1990s. Today, Craftsman homes are among the most sought-after residential styles in America.
