Tudor

A romantic English style characterized by half-timbered facades, steep roofs, and medieval-inspired charm.

History of Tudor Architecture

Tudor architecture takes its name from the Tudor dynasty that ruled England from 1485 to 1603. The original style was characterized by half-timbered construction, where wooden frames were filled with plaster or brick in decorative patterns. Grand Tudor buildings like Hampton Court Palace combined medieval English building traditions with emerging Renaissance influences.

The Tudor Revival became enormously popular in England and America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In America, Tudor Revival homes became one of the most desired residential styles from the 1890s through the 1940s, prized for their picturesque, storybook quality and their evocation of Old World craftsmanship.

Tudor Revival architects adapted the style freely, combining genuine medieval elements with modern construction techniques. The style was particularly popular in affluent suburbs, where it suggested cultural sophistication and established wealth. While construction declined during World War II, Tudor-inspired homes continue to be built and are among the most valued historic residential styles.
