Post-Processing

Image editing techniques applied after rendering to enhance visual quality, adjust atmosphere, and prepare images for presentation.

What is Post-Processing?

Post-processing refers to the image editing and enhancement techniques applied to rendered images after the 3D rendering process is complete. This stage transforms raw render output into polished presentation imagery through color correction, compositing, and the addition of atmospheric effects and contextual elements.

Common post-processing adjustments include exposure and contrast optimization, color grading to establish mood, and sharpening to enhance detail clarity. Lens effects like bloom, chromatic aberration, and vignetting can add photographic realism. These adjustments are typically made in image editing software like Photoshop or dedicated compositing applications.

Compositing combines multiple image elements into a cohesive final image. Rendered buildings might be placed into photographed site contexts. Separately rendered elements like vegetation, people, and vehicles are added to populate scenes. Multiple render passes—diffuse, reflection, ambient occlusion—can be combined with individual control over each element.

Post-processing is where visualization artists exercise significant creative control. Two artists working from the same raw render might produce dramatically different final images through their post-processing choices. This stage allows for rapid iteration and experimentation without re-rendering, making it an efficient point for client feedback and revision.

Examples in Practice

  • Color grading to establish warm or cool atmospheric moods
  • Compositing rendered buildings into site photographs
  • Adding entourage elements like people, cars, and vegetation
  • Combining multiple render passes for maximum control

How This Relates to AI Visualization
